Meal service is from 4-5 pm each Saturday and Sunday at First Baptist Church, High Street, Morgantown (exception: Wesley UMC serve on the 2nd weekend each month from their church building on North High St.)
Volunteers from the First Baptist Church congregation arrive at 3:30 pm and unlock the back door to the church from the parking lot off Spruce Street. 3:30-4:00pm time period is used for meal set up. There is really only time to make coffee, reheat vegetables or soup and make sandwiches. NOTE: there is a set of steep narrow stairs to the fellowship hall where the meal is served. Some of our volunteers cannot help carrying items in/out because of the steps.
Items belonging to First Baptist that we use include: Coffee maker, large (6 gal.) drink dispenser with spigot, salt/pepper shakers, trays, serving spoon/ladles/spatulas, garbage bags, clean-up supplies – dish clothes/towels, dishwashing detergent, pot holders. (the volunteer who opens the doors takes kitchen linens home to wash)
Items (as needed) that we bring to serve the meal: disposable plates/bowls, disposable spoons/forks/knives, disposable cups (cold and hot) some with lids, napkins, coffee creamers, coffee sugars, paper or plastic bags for to-go items, food wraps – Saran, foil, baggies, etc.
The St. Paul Lutheran Circle of Friends [CoF] typical routine (we are currently serving both Sat. & Sun. of the same weekend):
We have a dedicated group of Circle of Friends volunteers on an email group. About 10 days before our Saturday meal, the group leader composes a menu for both days and emails the list of needed food items to the group. (The summer menus will typically have a salad – macaroni, potato, or coleslaw - rather than soup and only have cold drinks.)
An example of our email: (There is usually some greeting/thanks statements in the email before we get to the menu.)
Saturday, Dec. 26th - 60 meals [we had coffee at both meals, but had enough donated from earlier meals]
Soup - Borrelli
Saltines or Oyster crackers
Sandwich rolls - need 4 doz (we have 3 doz. already)
